NUTRACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS
CAMINA focuses on the design and manufacture of a prototype lab-scale equipment based on Variosol® cryospraying technology and recent patented innovations around the Process. The lab-scale equipment will be used to produce formulations of active principles, of natural origins, in the form of micronized powders targeting the nutraceutical market. These prototype formulations will be thoroughly characterized, so to meet the expectations of the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors as well.

NutraCos focuses on the transformation of production waste from alimentary (tomato, rice, oil, wine, spirits) sector and/or brewery, in order to produce new natural raw materials which could be safely used in new and innovative Food Supplements, Cosmetics or Medical Devices. The project aims to expand the range of bioactive compounds obtainable from scraps of agro-industrial productions, especially from skins and grape seeds after wine distillation, or husk and rice straw: waste of rice processing. This will be accomplished by applying and optimizing innovative and environmentally sustainable dense-CO2 based extraction and encapsulation processes, currently operating at pilot-scale, and by implementing a purification membrane system (ultra and nano filtration, reverse osmosis) to obtain pure high value substances.

SiTec PharmaBio and Primex ehf, an Icelandic marine biotech company and a global leader in the manufacture and supply of pure chitin and chitosan products, are partners in a financed R&D program to obtain high-value micronized products from Primex bioindustrial process drainage fluids. SiTec PharmaBio will apply its cryospraying technology, alone and in combination with other dense CO2 – based processes, to develop such products. The project goal is to improve the conversion of bioindustrial waste into high value material, obtaining purified biomolecules such as carotenoids, fatty acids and proteins, in stable micronized forms. These purified, micronized formulations may be developed into valuable products for the nutritional, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical markets.
